Evaluating Genotype Frequencies within the Chitinase Gene
My research project aims to correlate people's genotypes with the microbiological residents of their mouths. To accomplish this, I have created primers of the chitinase (CHIT1) gene. CHIT1 is an anti-fungal gene that has a common mutation that inhibits the gene from functioning properly, therefore allowing for the presence of fungi. Using these primers I performed PCR assay on the Native American, Indonesian, and Chronic Rhinosinusitis populations to screen the frequency of this mutation. To evaluate seasonal microbiome, Emily Cope is collecting samples from students and faculty members at NAU this semester. Until that is complete, I can then perform PCR on those samples also.
